Bongani Khunjwa has been hailed as a hero after saving a pedestrian in Cosmo City, Johannesburg, on Sunday. The 30-year-old nurse said he was driving past when he saw the accident.

“I grabbed my first-aid kit and rushed to help.” Bongani said he was grateful for the appreciation and that the patient had a head injury.

“I don’t work. Perhaps this will bring me to the notice of health institutions.” The pedestrian is being treated at Helen Joseph Hospital.

Witness, 30-year-old Rendani Manyage said: “I helped Bongani with the first-aid kit while we were waiting for emergency services. He went beyond the call of duty.”

Rendani praised taxi drivers who helped.

“Drivers controlled the traffic while other taximen handed Bongani water to wash the patient,” he said.

People took to Twitter to applaud Bongani’s efforts.
