The Democratic Alliance’s former policy head Gwen Ngwenya has announced that she won’t be taking up her seat in Parliament.
In a tweet, Ngwenya said she’s opting to analyse policy and explore the tech world.
I have decided not to take up my seat in the 6th Parliament. Before policy dev I worked in fintech, and I’d like to work now on issues at the nexus of tech and public policy. There are great people who will be on those benches, and I wish the DA a successful term.

Former DA leader and Western Cape Premier Helen Zille was among the first to comment, saying Ngwenya’s departure was a huge loss for the team.
So sorry to hear that Gwen. You are a huge loss to the team. But all the best in your future work.

In January, Ngwenya resigned from her role over the party’s lack of interest in policy.
Ngwenya stated her reasons in an explosive letter to party leader Mmusi Maimane, saying her job description had never been defined and she was not given the resources or access to do her work effectively.
