The ANC has defended Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s comments that foreign nationals should pay for using South Africa’s public healthcare facilities.
But the party says the law must ensure the country doesn’t violate its international obligations to protect foreigners.
Speaking on Wednesday at post-budget discussions, Makhura hit out at foreign nationals, also accusing them of committing crimes.
Makhura stated, “in some specific crimes, specific nationalities are involved, in some specific crimes drugs, violent crimes and murders including cash in transit heists.”
Amid applause from some audience members, the Premier said, “it’s not xenophobia, we work with that country to say, your citizens are free to come to our country but they contribute to a problem. A particular area of crime.
